Progress Update

March 23, 2008 at 7:51 pm (apps, building, roleplaying, staff update, testing) (, , , , , )

London Above has been created and desced. It’s a bit larger than I planned. First, I destroyed the Strand and other rooms of the West End. Second, I built the East End, Whitechapel mostly because that’s where I envisioned folks playing due to the plots I have in mind. Then more and more people started filtering in, and I realized that while many of them were very good about creating RP hooks that involved the East End, they were going to need a West End, too. So I rebuilt the Strand plus a few streets of interest for the West End. Now, I haven’t built any tea houses or anything like that on the West End, but I expect some of the players will be building places like that anyway.

So we have the West End. A transit system hasn’t been written yet.

Still, London Underground is needed- sewers, trains, a few forgotten catacombs perhaps, and the vampire haven.

In other news, some of the players hit the grid the other night and started to RP their characters.

We’ve had more of a turn out than I expected, and that’s not a bad thing. It just means more work and some embarrassing moments where I’m thinking, I haven’t written that news file yet! Please don’t ask me about x, y, or z. It’s a horrible feeling because I know what I, as a player, would expect. I know what I as a staffer expect, too, and suddenly I’m not making either of my demands. Yet, I have the we’re-in-a-pre-alpha-phase-but-will-help-if-you-want-to-app-early flag to wave, so it’s not that bad.

I admit I wonder if opening our doors in preparation for the alpha phase was the wrong decision. Earlier today Jonquil and I discussed a possible moratorium on applications for the remainder of the test phase, but so far it’s only a thought. I wouldn’t do it because of the increase in my workload but because I’m worried that the rate of progress and the changes made may be more of a disservice to the players and thus the game than a help, at least from their perspectives.

We’ll see. So far, everyone has been really great about it, and we have some excellent players. It’s a pity there isn’t much play going on right now, but we’re just not in that stage yet. Perhaps in a few more weeks, once more files, gifts, and aspects of the system are in place, we’ll (or I’ll) run some events, start a small plot.

Perhaps.

Character Creation

February 18, 2008 at 11:50 pm (building, staff update, testing) (, , , , , , )

Character creation* (but not generation) is now available at The Veiled Kingdoms MUSH (theveiledkingdoms.com port 4201). You must connect as a guest and @register your character name to create the character object and connect. Once you have done that, the password will be emailed to you.

Feel free to connect as a guest and chat with us or create a character and hang out!

Character Generation is almost complete, although our grid is still in need of descriptions. The +gifts will increase and become more detailed in the next month, too. The +news files are coming along as well.

*Character Creation: Creating a character object to use, not generating a character concept for play.

Thoughts on Possible Staff Positions and Sundry

December 12, 2007 at 4:15 pm (staff update) (, , , , , , , )

Well, Jonquil has been busy reloading stuff, but everything seems to be in place again. And because I couldn’t stand how jumbled together the rooms were, I spent thirty minutes and made an OOC room parent and an IC room parent.

I spoke with one player, a player I’ve known for about a year, elseMU*, and I think he might make a fine judge staff. A judge staff/wiz/person would make the tough calls, and to slow anyone from calling the judge biased, that’s the only role that staff member fulfills. But the judge could make decisions on anything from policy to player contest to player-staff disagreement to bad staffing behavior to bad player behavior and also get a vote on things like theme and plots, just like all the other staff. But do we really need a judge? Probably not since I don’t imagine they’ll get much work, but I think it would be nice to have.

I also admit this player would probably make a good were-faction staffer, too, but I’m not sure that role will ever need to be filled.

Then again, despite being vampire-centric, I feel like many people will probably want to play were-somethings or merpeople. (We are offering sirens/merpeople to make things a bit more interesting. Not many players want to play were-rats after all.) But it’s been decided that there will be only so many available slots in a group. That, and people should not be passing up the opportunity to play humans here. Like everything else at Mission Hill, they can be really cool really easily.

At least that’s what we have in mind.

For those of you who know about our game, it won’t let you connect if you try as we don’t want folks swinging by just yet. (Don’t spoil the surprise!)

I find that hideous connect page rather embarrassing, but I doubt I change it before most of our +news files are in place.
